How to Get Out of Your Own Way

Getting in your own way is inevitable when you live in your head. The world outside your mind becomes hazy and you might think of hypothetical scenarios. What was or what could be.

Chances are you’re living in the past or living in the future. Neither are wrong if you’re studying history or predicting weather forecasts for a vacation, but if either of these keeps you from taking action, then you’re in bad shape.

A bias toward action means you lean toward a behavior that drives you forward. This will get you out of living in your own head. Jumping out of the airplane if you’re skydiving, cooking a vegan dinner, or writing a blog post. Take the action that seems challenging and do it despite the limiting beliefs swimming around your head.

Limiting beliefs are always present. They may sound like: “I’m not good enough.” “The weather is crappy.” “He’ll say no.”

Find at least five reasons to prove that these limiting beliefs are wrong. Let’s take the “I’m not good enough” example. This type of thinking is wrong because:

  1. You have to be good at something if you graduated Kindergarten
  2. You can find someone who’s done it before. Learn, listen and ask questions
  3. You’re alive and have the ability to stand up to take action
  4. You are bright, passionate, and brave enough to try (or pick your own positive affirmation)
  5. You’re simply amazing… give yourself some credit

When you get in your own way, seek advice from someone you trust. Talking with a trusted advisor can help you see your situation from a different perspective and allow you to stretch and grow in new ways.

Getting out of your own way takes courage, faith, and self-love.

Be brave and trust you’re right where you’re supposed to be.
